James is Internet Society's Chief Communications Officer. He joined the Internet Society in January 2015. With oversight of both internal and external communications functions, he leads a team responsible for the development and implementation of communication strategies that advance the organization’s public policy, technology and development objectives and that drive greater visibility and awareness of the Internet Society’s work around the world. 

James brings extensive specialist public relations and media consultancy experience to the organization, amassed over more than 15 years spent working across a wide spectrum of technologies and in a range of agency and in-house roles. 

Prior to joining the Internet Society, he worked at London-based technology public relations firm AxiCom, a WPP company and part of the worldwide Cohn & Wolfe global network of agencies. During his nearly ten years at the company, he established and led AxiCom’s dedicated Policy & Governance practice, supporting clients operating at the intersection of technology and policy, including those active in Internet governance discussions. He also managed global and pan-regional communications activities for several well-known global technology brands in the telecoms, mobile and broadcast industries including leading the global function for Nokia’s Mobile Phones business (now part of Microsoft Devices Group) in emerging markets. 

Previously, James worked for one of the world’s first digital payTV satellite operators, Orbit Satellite Television & Radio Network, based in Rome, Italy. 

James is based in London. He has a Master of Arts degree in Islamic History and Modern Standard Arabic from SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies), University of London and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Modern European Languages from the University of East Anglia, U.K. He is also fluent in French and Italian.
