About the Position:
The Senior Director, Communications’ primary responsibility will be to assist and support the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) in directing the Internet Society’s global communications activities, taking a hands-on role in devising and implementing the strategy to raise the profile of the organization through a full mix of marcomms related disciplines.

The Senior Director, Communications is responsible for ensuring that communications programmes in support of the organization’s objectives are implemented as efficiently as possible and that deliverables and targets are met. In this role, he/she will help to structure and coordinate these programmes, maintaining a full view of all ISOC communications activities at all times and connecting them as necessary. In this way, it is a requirement of the position to work across the full spectrum of marketing and communications channels and to provide strategic support to the CCO in all areas.

Operationally, the Senior Director will work to deliver excellence across the main functional areas of the Strategic Communications department, including media relations, public relations and marketing, campaign planning and execution, content generation, social media and events planning efforts at both global and regional level.

The Senior Director, Communications will perform a lead role in managing a small, globally distributed team of professionals that delivers high quality, integrated communications campaigns. The role requires creativity in approaching communications challenges, and proactivity in seeking to continuously improve what we do as well as coordination and collaboration with all parts of the organization to build a joined-up approach across key issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The key responsibilities of the position include:

* developing the brand identity of the organization;
* developing and delivering multi-channel campaigns in support of strategic objectives;
* driving a world-class programme of media relations through our global network of regional offices and partner agencies
* maintaining and enhancing our online presence, including our main website;
* managing our online channels and developing our digital strategy, including in social media;
* managing the production of written copy to exacting deadlines;
* developing a content strategy for the organiations that supports Comms requirements and other functions
* enhancing our strategic messaging platform and creating new messaging opportunities for the organization. Strategic alignment of global and regional messaging
* assisting with the events, both in the design, management and execution;
* networking with stakeholders and key contacts as well as any other marketing and communications duties as required.

Desired Qualifications:

1. 10-15 years of proven expertise in working effectively across a globally and culturally diverse organization to establish, organize and manage communication and marketing efforts and planning initiatives. 
2. A results-oriented approach
3. Excellent communication, leadership, negotiation, influencing, relationship building and project management skills.
4. A good understanding of a range of communications disciplines including publicity, event management, campaigns, crisis management, and digital communications as well as being politically astute, with the ability to identify potential problems early and come up with deliverable solutions, often under considerable pressure.
5. A high level of knowledge and expertise in devising, implementing and evaluating campaigns, drawing upon first-hand experience across the relevant communications disciplines: political affairs, media relations, digital communications and stakeholder management.
6. A proven track record of successfully handling very sensitive and high profile media issues and experience of working with high profile figures within similarly complex organizations.
7. A proven ability of managing experienced teams to get the best results, and the ability to cope with the unexpected are essential for this job.
8. Strong writing and verbal communications skills are essential.  The ability to communicate fluently in one or more languages other than English is highly desirable.
9. Significant international experience that naturally allows empathy for different perspectives on an issue and recognizes the possibilities of the Internet in improving the lives of people globally.
10. A sense of urgency and timing that will instill a leadership approach that supports ISOC’s culture while moving the business of the organization forward.
